Twelve years ago, I made the life-changing decision to leave New Zealand and start anew in California after marrying an American. While I am grateful for the opportunities that have come my way, the transition was not without its challenges. Initially, I struggled to adapt to the cultural differences and the fast-paced lifestyle of the United States.
When I return to New Zealand, I often experience reverse culture shock, where familiar surroundings suddenly feel foreign. The nuances of everyday life, from social interactions to local customs, can be overwhelming. Additionally, I have encountered the "tall poppy syndrome" prevalent in the US, where individuals are often discouraged from standing out or showcasing their achievements.
Despite these hurdles, I have grown to appreciate the diversity and vibrancy of my new home. Each visit back to New Zealand reminds me of my roots, while my life in California continues to shape my identity in profound ways.
